Our First Siberian Husky

Our First Siberian Husky - Yazmin
Forstal's Yazmin Of Polarspirit

I bought my first book on Siberian Huskies about 14 years ago when we were looking into getting our first dog. Back then, we opted for Samoyeds instead but my admiration for Siberian Huskies has always stayed firm with additional books and information on the breed gradually being added to. We have obviously spent quite a bit of time over the years around Siberian Huskies whilst at the sled dog races and at dog shows so finally, in 2009 we decided that the time was now right for us to expand our numbers again and to look for a a pair of Sibe sisters to join our furry family.

On the 7th of January 2010, litter sisters Yazmin and Boudicca joined our family and became the first Siberian Husky members of the Polarspirit Pack.

Yazmin and Boudicca have settled in here wonderfully and are a real joy to have around. Solomon especially, is totally in love with both of them and seems to spend most of his time with them, either playing with the toys together or just generally lounging around next to the two of them.

True to form here at Polarspirit, the other Sams are all happy to have the pups snuggle up with them or to have a play with them but as they have each already experienced new pups before, they prefer to sit back and wait for the pups to come to them, whereas Solomon, as the youngest, actively seeks the pups out and has generally taken them under his wing.

Yazmin Exploring her new home

every inch of it

Having a play in the snow

and pruning the Jasmine

Relaxing on the sofa,
chewing something that she is probably not supposed to have!

Digging, who me?

When you can't find your sister to play with
any Sibe will do

Snuggling on the sofa with Boudicca

Hey, it's that third Sibe
getting in on the act again!

The Bear may be bigger but Yazmin won

She is such a sweetie!

Yazmin and Boudicca love to snuggle up together

The smaller the space,
the more they seem to like it

Yazmin is such a lady and quite often sits to eat her dinner.
All she needs now is a napkin!

This wire and fencing was put up to stop the dogs from digging up or stealing the strawberries but Yazmin likes to think that it was put there for her to climb up and relax on

What do you do when there is not enough room on the sofa?
Why you just climb on top of those that are already there and snuggle in anyway!

The toys in the toy box also make for a nice soft spot

Then, of course, there is also the top of the outside rabbit run, as you can see here, Yazmin also likes to lean back into the hedge for maximum comfort when on there

Here Yazmin takes the opportunity to have a good nose around in Sir Hopsalots' cage, whilst he is out having a hop around the sitting room.
As you can see, they both know where the other is and both are perfectly happy and relaxed about it.

For most Sibes you would never allow them this close contact with a rabbit, we are able to as our situation is rather unique. All our dogs live in the house with us, not out in a kennel and our rabbit is a house bunny too and as such, has grown up with all our dogs constantly around him and they too have grown up with him around them. They are all thoroughly used to each other. Sir Hopsalot knows to be nice and calm around our dogs and our adult dogs know to be nice and calm and gentle around him. This obviously helps us greatly in getting the Sibes used to also being calm and safe around him too. The dogs are very slowly desensitised to having Sir Hopsalot around them from the moment that they arrive as puppies and are always closely supervised by us when Hops is out of his cage. As we have many years of experience of introducing our house rabbits to our dogs we are used to implementing and controlling these interactions.

Please do not assume that because our dogs and rabbits are fine with each other that yours will be too. Sibes are known for their high prey drive!
